After moving on from Chip Kelly the Eagles are a totally different team now under new head coach Doug Pederson, former quarterback and later offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. Philadelphia drafted quarterback Carson Wentz second overall, however the rookie has time to develop under Sam Bradford who is expected to take the reins of this offense to start the season. Some question marks had the team trading for wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham in hopes he can start opposite Jordan Mathews. We should see a RB by committee approach with Ryan Matthews handling early down work and veteran Darren Sproles coming in on passing downs.
Defensively the Eagles also made a move to bring Stephen Tulloch, who will reunite with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz after Joe Walker went down with an ACL injury in the Week 2 preseason game at Pittsburgh. This unit has looked good so far, displaying a physical and aggressive style of play.
The Cleveland Browns are also making a splash in the preseason, especially Robert Griffin III who has looked poised and in sync with now wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, tight end Gary Barnidge and also having Josh Gordon along with rookie Corey Coleman who we are excited to see play. These guys might surprise some people, and the public will undervalue the Browns at least until they prove us wrong, don´t buy in all the preseason hype.
The Browns defense is looking like the Browns defense, once again having trouble defending the run. Last year they finished 30th against the run and in a 24-13 preseason loss to the Atlanta Falcons they already gave up 224 yards on the ground. Nothing at this point leads us to believe that this unit is going to suddenly improve, and they should again struggle this year.
Every time we have a new head coach coming in it tends to cloud the situation a bit due to not knowing what to expect, however we do know that these offenses have shown potential and that both teams will be dealing with defensive issues. There should be plenty of points to go around.
